I mentioned in a previous post about feeling content that it’s important to declutter your life. So, on a sunny Sunday this weekend I decided now was the time to take my own advice. I’ve been run down lately, works hectic and I’ve been slowly letting my body give up on me in the run up to our holiday that things like my blog and keeping the house in order has fallen by the wayside. It doesn’t help that both Mr C & I are terribly untidy, our house can quickly become to look like a car boot / jumble sale without us even realising.

There’s a number of factors (ahem excuses ahem) that contributes to this, one of the reasons is because we live in a newish build, 2 up -2 down situation and there is hardly any storage so wardrobes and cupboards start to burst at the seams and I also get sent a heck of a lot of stuff for the blog. A lot of stuff that I hardly have any room for. My clothes rails have both collapsed leaving my back bedroom looking like you’d get eaten by a clothes pile if you aren’t careful. You would literally never resurface if you had fallen in to it.

I decided enough was enough. I needed to make a change and get rid of all the unnecessary clutter that has probably been contributing to my terrible mood swings as of late. I created three piles, one for charity, one for eBay and one for the dustbin. Starting at 10am in the morning and finishing around 5pm at night I managed to back up five bin bags worth of stuff, a solid 7 hours of going hard at it. I said goodbye to shoes and clothes I hadn’t worn in years, threw out beauty products that were well past their sell by date and managed to free up a massive amount of space in our tiny little home.

I can’t tell you how good I have felt since doing it. Not only did I give lots of lovely things to charity that I no longer have a use for, I was able to make space for cute little home pieces such as this Lightbox from MenKind (thanks guys!) It makes me a real blogger now having one of these in my little area in my back bedroom, I can create motivational little messages to keep me energised and more positive about things which is exactly what I’m needing with the darker nights drawing in. I’m wondering what words I should add to it for when we get back off holiday. How about “DON’T CRY!” – what do you think? But gradually, the house now feels like it has a new lease of life and I have to admit, so do I!

Sometimes you really just have to give yourself a little kick up the bum and actually listen to the advice which you give others. You know the saying, “practice what you preach!” And I’m so glad I did. I feel like I can go away with a fresh mind knowing I won’t be coming back to a pig sty. Sometimes an Autumn Spring Clean is what you need to see the cooler months in.

Do you feel better after a good clear out? Do you find it hard to swallow your pride and listen to your own advice?
