You know when you look outside and the weather is just grim and there’s not a lot you can really do, especially for someone who likes to be outdoors just like me, that the only thing on the agenda is a good movie night in. The guys at PlusNet and the BFIare celebrating blockbuster season right through from September to December so it seemed the perfect opportunity to put on a film and get some popcorn in the microwave. When it get’s halfway through the month and funds are a little tight, dimming the lights and putting on a good film is a great idea for a date night that doesn’t cost the earth. All you need to do is get some candles lit, the fire toasted up & a big duvet and you will be all set to go.
Now Harry met Sally is an absolute classic, but sadly, it’s not quite within the remits of my husband’s film repertoire so it’s something for me to watch on my own on a rain day when he’s out and about. So instead we decided to trawl through the BFI Player and see what they had to offer on their 30 day free trial. Of course, it was a no brainer and Bridget Jones was a winner. With it’s wonderful British humour and clever wit, this concoction of female questions on sex, self-doubt and how to be a modern woman mixed with the most hilarious (disastrous) moments from start to finish it’s a film that everyone (well at least I think everyone) loves in the UK. I even heard Mr C chuntering a few times to one of my favourite films.
Of course, an evening of films is not complete without a face mask to completely embrace a night of relaxation, the guys at PlusNet made it very easy to carelessly enjoy a night of pampering and film watching with very minimal effort.
It got us thinking about how fabulous the British Film Insitute is and how many of our favourite British films are absolute classics. Some of our favourites include Snatch, Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels and Layer Cake. Whilst they aren’t quite the typical love story, we seem to do British Gangster films pretty well here in the UK and I think it’s because we have some of the finest, funniest and most brilliant actors on home turf. I like gritty films, whilst Blow is not a film made here, it is one of my all time FAVOURITE films and it will take a lot to knock that one off the top spot.
Whilst Blow will always have a special place in my heart, it’s so great that the BFI provide audiences with some of the most flourishing films and talents that not only the UK, but the rest of the world has to offer. With films such as chart topper, The Imitation Game right through to a 90’s classic, Shakespeare in Love their gift of being able to adapt wonderful screenplays on to the big screen is exactly what they do best.
What’s your favourite film of all time? Is it a British classic or something else? I’d love to hear from you in the comments below.
