MY 3 FAVOURITE UK CITIES (OUTSIDE OF YORKSHIRE)
I’ve had the pleasure of exploring the UK a little more over recent years and sometimes I find a weekend on home turf just as exciting as jetting off across the pond. There’s something to be said for the amazing architecture, ever-growing brunch spots and museums that this country has to offer and it’s no wonder our very own capital has been named as the “Best City in the World” by TripAdvisor this year. But, aside from London Town, there are some absolute gems that I’ve loved visiting here in the UK – some of which I’ve decided to take multiple visits to as well.
Oh Liverpool. How my heart somehow weirdly feels like it belongs here. I’ve been many times to this city and it never fails to make me love it any less, I just keep loving it more. From weekends away with the husband to copious amounts of hen do’s this place really is one-stop-shop for all your requirements.
If you’re a music lover, then you can’t spend a weekend not heading to the Beatles Museum or the Cavern Club, you can have a funky brunch at Love Thy Neighbour on Bold Street, shop for hours at Liverpool One, Check out the art at the Tate and sip cocktails at the Albert Docks (one of my favourite places in the city.)
I’m not entirely sure why there is such a gravitational pull to this place, maybe it’s because every time I’ve been there’s been fantastic new memories made and stories to tell years later but there is something about this city that will always have my heart!
My top tip: If you want to visit the Beatles Story, book online because you can fast track the queues!
I’ve only ever visited Oxfordthe once, but it didn’t seem quite enough and I’m often wondering when I could fit in another trip to this beautiful city. From the moment you arrive you feel, quite simply, that you’ve entered some magical land. It’s probably helped by the fact that a lot of the Harry Potter films used locations around Oxford for filming, but the sheer beauty in the old architecture is something to behold. It’s probably one of the most romantic UK destinations I’ve been to for that reason.
I’d say stop and take a moment to catch your breath at St Mary’s Church Tower, however, you have to climb a whopping 127 steps to reach the top. But, it’s oh-so worth it when you reach the viewing platform and look out on this whimsical and mystical city, it lends itself so well to the title of the city of dreaming spires.
Where the city meets countryside, it’s hard not to feel like you’re in one of the most wonderful places on earth here by being presented with the best of both worlds. (It’s probably why I love it so much!)
My top tip: Head to the indoor market to grab a milkshake from MooMoo’s – they have a crazy amount of flavours to create your own personal shake!
It seems I have a bit of thing for Northern cities (it’s hard not to when they are so cool!) Yes, Manchester rates very highly on my list of UK cities that you most definitely have to visit. Similar to Liverpool there’s so much to do and there’s a massive music influence here too. It’s probably why I like it so much. Usually our weekends that have been spent in Manchester have been for gigs, so we decide to make it in a long weekend to escape for a few days (and also so we don’t have to worry about getting home from a concert too late!)
One of my favourite parts of town is the Northern Quarter – there’s so many cool places to grab brunch and a nice, cold beer! I’ve had some of the nicest food there and very reasonably priced too.
The fact that Harvey Nichols and Selfridges are right next door to one another make it impossible to not want to go shopping whilst you’re there! I bought my first, hard-earned, designer bag on one of my trips to Manchester so it was moment that felt quite special that I’d managed to save and be able to buy something a little frivolous for my 28th birthday.
My top tip: For a cheap but quality steak frites in the city, head to Terrace in the Northern Quarter – it was under £10!
