WHY YOUR PARTNER IS THE BEST TRAVEL BUDDY

This post is almost an ode to my husband, I mean let’s face it, no-one else would put up with my shit so I do have to give him some credit. Credit owed, where credit’s due and all that. Solo travel has only ever crossed my mind when I find myself feeling a little jealous seeing other’s do it (or on the odd occasion when I could throw a shoe at my hubby’s head!) Yes, I wish I was as brave as they were but truth be told I don’t think I’d enjoy it as much as we are all lead to believe we would. I don’t doubt for a moment that travelling solo is wonderful, good for the soul and something everyone needs to try but at the moment, I’m just not about that style of travel. So, here’s why your partner is the best travelling buddy!

Creating memories that will last you a lifetime is something I am an advocate for. I want to get the most out of every trip I take so I have these mental snapshots in my head for the rest of my years and have stories to tell loved ones. I can’t imagine not being able to tell certain stories, without my husband and I bouncing off one another about the things we’ve seen, heard and done to our friends. It makes it all the more fun when someone can help fill in the gaps!

The thought of not sharing those fun, special moments with my husband could literally reduce me to tears. It may sound sad & corny, I know, but I want to grow old, laughing about those silly times together and remember those awe-inspiring moments we shared with one another.

I suffer from anxiety and as much as my holidays are my “happy time” there are elements that can send my stress levels through the roof. I have to check if I have passports a million times, if we locked the door before we set off to the airport or did I leave any of the hobs on before we locked the said door and left for our jollies. Honestly, these are just a tiny select few of the very intense thoughts I have each and every time we jet off on an adventure. If I had no-one around me whilst I was worrying, I’d probably go out of my mind.

Having Mr C around keeps me almost stress-free as he knows how to keep me calm and move my train of thought away from the things that are making me feel nervous before we board a flight. I’m also pretty cynical too and keep my wits about me, my husband has a slight more care-free attitude with things, so we balance each other out – I stop him from getting conned whilst abroad and he makes me try new things! If I was on my own, I’d be my own worst nightmare.

Not only with my anxiety, I take great joy from having someone around me who gets my schedules and my quirks – it always makes things a little easier. I’ll never forget a weekend away with friends was spent working out when and how many times we were going to shower that day before they’d let us even leave the apartment (tedious to say the least!) so having your partner who knows what your little habits are makes it all the more relaxed – thank goodness!

The stress of worrying about money is also a little less arduous! From a cost point of view, you can split things down the middle or help each other out when funds are a little tight for one or the other. To help, we’ve set up a joint currency card where we can both keep topping it up on payday and seeing those funds rise is very pleasing on the eye!

Aside from deciding who is going to pay the bill, every single night is date night when you’re on holiday! I mean, we don’t go all “Lady & the Tramp” or anything, but it’s a great time to just put the phones to one side and sit face to face, across from one another at the dinner table, eating good food and slurping all down with a bottle of wine.

Those simple nights, with the gentle summer breeze on bare shoulders, watching the sunset illuminate the skies with pinks and oranges, where we natter about everything that doesn’t include any of the mundane, day-to-day shit is exactly the tonic you need on holiday! (Christ, get me on a plane. STAT!)

Finally, let’s face it – I wouldn’t be a blogger if this didn’t feature for all the reasons your partner is the best travel buddy post, now would it? You have an Instagram Husband! Having one who is compliant with your photography requests is another big seller here. I mean, who on earth would I get to take umpteen photos of me basically doing the same pose in front of some famous landmark? No-one. And, when he’s in a very good mood, he really is quite the photographer – I just need to get him to think a little bit more about angles now. Any tips before we go to Barcelona?

As much as I love my space and time to myself, just having 2 nights away from Mr C whilst he was on a stag do proved that I’m not always my own, best company. And, I’m okay that I’m not this bad-ass, female, solo traveller who has all her shit together! I’m at peace that I’m my happiest when my other half is travelling with me, no matter how annoying we are to one another. Making those memories together, quite simply put, is what it’s all about for me and our marriage.

Who do you travel with when you go on holiday?
