Hands up if you love nothing more than a bacon sandwich for breakfast? I know I’m guilty of it. I’m always looking for healthier ways to start the day (ahem, belgian hot chocolates do not count just because they are “liquid”) So when Good Grain wanted to challenge me to a 5 ways, 5 days challenge of creating different breakfasts with their puffed rice & wheat cereals I was more than up for the #Grainspiration challenge. Using some of their own ideas and incorporating some of mine, my week long challenge was about to begin…
My first breakfast consisted of the plain puffed wheat with strawberry yoghurt, fresh raspberries and blueberries too. This is without a doubt my favourite breakfast that I had during the week. It was refreshing and felt more like a treat rather than being full blown “healthy” – my rather large helping definitely set me up for the day and I didn’t feel the hunger pangs before lunch time which is a natural win-win situ for me.
On my second day I spiced it up with a banana, cocoa powder and peanut butter concoction (but I removed the jam) and sweet, heavenly Jesus. This is definitely for those days when you crave a sweet treat because this went down like a desert. Nom-A-Licious!
The next day I thought I’d spice it up a little and try making a smoothie with the plain puffed grains. And completely steer off the typical cereal bowl. I love smoothies and they are one of my go-to meal replacements. I used my acti-blend to create it. I popped in a small handful full of Good Grain puffed grains with 3/4 of a pint of almond milk, 1 chopped banana, a handful of strawberries and blueberries and blended a slightly, bitty but tasty smoothie to start the day. Again, it did fill me up as I can never drink smoothies too quickly so spaced it out over the morning. A great way to keep hunger at bay and stops you from reaching towards unnecessary snacks!
My fourth day, I kept it pretty simple. With the cherry filled puffed wheat cereal I added a mango yoghurt. And whilt these photos appear to make it look pretty sweet for “the ‘gram” it was probably my worst pairing. Sadly, the dried cherry pieces just didn’t go with my thick, creamy Greek style mango yoghurt. I tired to mix it all together, but I wasn’t kidding anyone. I had made a terrible pairing here. Whoops.
And finally, on my last day I created the “It’s all Peachy” but removed the blackberries & honey (because I forgot to buy them in. Silly me.) Add 1 serving of plain wheat, add greek yoghurt and tinned peaches (keep some of the juice) and it’s a heavenly pairing. This scrumptious breakfast didn’t feel too much of a chore even though it was healthy.
At the end of my #Grainspiration challenge I have to say that I felt a lot healthier and a bit more adventurous when it comes to my breakfast options (it even stopped me reaching for the leftover, cold pizza one morning.)
What type of breakfasts do you create? I need some more inspo!
