THE IMPORTANCE OF FIRST IMPRESSIONS IN YOUR HOME

This is a collaborative post Cotswold Co. – The Importance of First Impressions in Your Home

Let’s face it people tend to make an impression of a house as soon as they walk through the front door and it can then be challenging to change this opinion once the seed has been planted. This means that you need to consider your home’s entrance & how you can make a house feel warm, welcoming and stylish as soon as you walk through the front door.

Staying Organised

For many people, the entrance is often a chaotic and cluttered space filled with shoes, coats, jackets, post, keys and all kinds of other items (I know mine can be!) Not only with it being a huge trip hazard, this can often create a messy and unorganised feel to the spot which you certainly don’t want your guests to notice. That’s why it is so important that everything has a home it can be placed in and go to, so the use of smart storage solutions like a shoe storage bench or a small sideboard from somewhere like Cotswold Co can really help pull it together.

Decoration

The hallway may not be somewhere that you spend a lot of time but it should still be stylish and a reflection of your personality. It is for this reason why you should have some form of decoration, such as a painting, ornament, flowers or family photographs. We have a huge hallway in our new home and I can’t wait to get decorating this area to make it feel like a welcoming and vibrant space!

Lighting

Isn’t it amazing the difference that lighting can have on any space? That’s why lighting is an area that you should definitely consider when playing Mr & Mrs DIY around the home. You can maximise natural light to make the space seem brighter and airier with glass panels in the door, strategically placed mirrors and light colours on the walls which can make a rather big difference to how bright a room can feel. I know our slightly off grey walls in our living room make the world of difference to the living space! You also need to make sure that you have adequate artificial lighting in place and consider some form of decorative lighting, such as fairy lights to create a cosy feel – who doesn’t love twinkling little lights through the winter months?

Cosy Fires & Log Burners

Our house really became a home as soon as we installed a log burner last Winter. As our layout is very much open plan you can feel the warmth as soon as you walk in the house. Suffice to say, I am very much looking forward to the Autumn and Winter seasons so we can crank it up again. A warm home creates a cosy atmosphere making people want to bask in the delightful heat, whilst warming up after a cold day outside! Add a cute log basket to keep all your firewood in one compact and tidy space too. If you’ve got the space and you’ve checked out your local authority that you aren’t in a smoke free zone, I would implore you to think about installing a log burner!

Fragrance

Every home has a unique smell and you usually notice this as soon as you enter. We have a dog so I’m forever buying new candles, sprays and wax melts to help cover up any smelly dog odours there might be! Of course you certainly want your home to be a pleasant smell and there are a few ways to achieve this, including flowers, a scented candle, a reed diffuser or air freshener. By keeping on top of cleanliness around the house, by regular hoovering, dusting, taking the bins out frequently and general day-to-day cleaning you can also minimise any nasty smells you might find!

These handy 5 tips should help you on your way to creating an attractive entrance and welcome to your home which will allow you to make a positive first impression on any guests that you might have. People are quick to judge a house as soon as they enter through the front door so you need to give this area of the home careful thought and consideration as you would with the rest of the home. Just a few simple steps could make this an attractive, welcoming and stylish place which will impress any visitors that decide to call in for a coffee!

How do you make sure first impressions count in your home?
