HOW TO SPEND A DAY IN LIVERPOOL #VISITLIVERPOOL

This was a press trip with Visit Liverpool – How to spend a day in Liverpool

Oh Liverpool, you really are a magical city. There is something that seems to draw me in to this place like no other. Maybe its because of the fond memories I hold with both my husband and friends, the people that live there, the amazing food and drink scene or the sheer history and pride that it holds deep within it. I was kindly invited by Visit Liverpool to come along for the day to experience some of the things that I haven’t already had chance to do whilst here previously. It was time to head back to a place I find so familiar for a day of even more exploring!

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR SOMEWHERE TO STAY IN LIVERPOOL?

Arriving bleary-eyed at Liverpool Lime Street Sttion after an early start, Lucy & I were quick to scout for an Uber to our first port of call on the itinerary. Within about 5 minutes we were picked up and driven to the Royal Liver Building down on the docks, it took about 4 minutes to get there with the traffic as opposed to a nice 30 minute walk had we have decided to pick up our legs and head down there the ol’ fashioned way. I’m not quite sure I was in the mood for that as we had a busy day planned!

Royal Liver Building 360 Experience

Our first stop on the agenda was the Royal Liver Buildings 360 Experience. Famed as the UK’s first ever Skyscraper, I hadn’t realised it’s huge historic value to the city. Completed in 1911, the construction started in 1908 so it took 3 years to build this beautiful building. It survived the wars with many theories as to why, some say Hitler’s step brother lived in Liverpool and he didn’t want to bring harm to him, there’s rumours that the German’s simply adored the building and wanted to make sure it was in ship-shape should they come to rule over England or simply, due to its impressive 322 feet stature, it served as a great reference point for when the German war planes flew over the UK. Whatever the reason may be, it has stood the test of time and it’s a monument for this exciting city.

The tour around the RLB360 lasts around 70 minutes, with a quick health and safety briefing you’re heading straight up in the lift after a little introduction to the building and transported up to the 10th floor to take a closer look at the clock towers! Suffice to say, it wasn’t a wise idea wearing a dress at such a height in the blustery winds. Those on the tour and the rest of Liverpool may or may not have had a little fright. So, the lesson learnt here is: WEAR TROUSERS!

Afterwards you make your way up some more steps to watch an amazing video that really brings Liverpool to life – I won’t give anything away, but even though I’m not from Liverpool I nearly did have to wipe away a tear. This city is so rich in its culture and history that there’s no wonder the locals are proud of where they come from.

Then its up some more steps, another 100 to take you to the top and to the bell tower (I didn’t find this too difficult but if you do struggle, let someone know!) where you get panoramic views over the city and the Mersey. Be warned, the bell chimes do make you jump out of your skin when they chime.

I have to say, it was one of my favourite parts of the day!

British Music Experience

With a hop, skip and jump to the building next door, the Cunard Building we found ourselves at the British Music Experience. Let’s face it, Liverpool is synonymous with music (ahem The Beatles ahem) and it only seems right that this city is host to some amazing music memorabilia! It is definitely worth a trip during your day in Liverpool.

With daily hologram shows in the main auditorium we managed to arrive just as one was about to begin which whizzed us through all the decades of iconic music we all know and love.

It only seemed right with the 25th Anniversary of Oasis debut album “Definitely Maybe” that I grab a quick photo with all the albums and instruments the band have used over the years, plus the famous lyrics that were written on a crumpled up, old piece of paper are available to view too. A little piece of history sits right there in a tiny glass box. I felt a little star struck if I’m honest!

It’s not just modern day music that the museum celebrates, but you can travel through time and check out different collections right through the decades. From Queen’s drum set, to Spice Girl Dolls, from David Bowie’s costumes right through to the outfits that Little Mix wore at the 2019 Brit Awards.

There’s loads of interactive activities too, such as the music room where you can pick up and instrument to play and jam or the dance room where you can pick up a few moves (note – this area is very cringey!)

As a music lover it’s quite something to soak in everything on offer to view here, it’s not a huge museum but it certainly pack a punch!

Tate Liverpool

For the art buffs out there, there’s a slice of the well-known London Art Gallery, the Tate situated right on the Albert Docks (my favourite place in the city) and it’s free entry too.

Visit Liverpool organised us access to the Keith Haring exhibition (paid entry) that is running until the 10th November. I obviously don’t want to give too much away with images but there’s a huge collection of his artwork on show that really pushed the boundaries with 1980’s pop art style graffiti (I’m talking lots of hidden penis’ within quite a chunk of his work!) His style is iconic &  I’m sure you would recognise his artwork if you saw it!

I’m no art expert but it’s always nice to walk round a gallery to experience different forms of art and expression.

Other Things to do in Liverpool

You can spend a full day down by the docks, so if you have plenty of time on during your day trip in Liverpool you can grab an ice cream and walk around this UNESCO heritage site and soak in the Liverpudlian quirks such as:-

I could go on & on, but one thing I know for certain is that I love Liverpool and every time I go there’s something new to explore!
