GET YOUR HOME COSY FOR WINTER

This is a collaborative post – Get your home cosy for Winter

As August leaves and September arrives in a flurry of orange and brown leaves, that morning chill and the sun slowly disappearing – the winter months are fast approaching. With that in mind it’s time to start working on those subtle home re-decorations that represent the transition from light and breezy to warm and cosy. Here, we’ll go over a few of the winter decorations we always fall back on when getting our homes ready for the season.

Rugs

Like a lot of people we have done away with carpets in favour of wooden flooring (boy, it’s so much easier to maintain with a dog in tow!) but whilst this can look great, lets face it, hardwood underfoot is just not as soft and warm as carpet. Simply by adding a rug it’s the perfect middle ground and they are easy enough to store away, but when spring time rolls around and the sun decides to rear its head again you can put it away for a rainy day.

Candles

My favourite thing about Winter is the influx of candles I have around the home. Scented candles with warming winter scents like cinnamon and forest fruits can really help to infuse your home with a seasonal atmosphere. Candles also offer a gentle and soft lighting that can lend a home a more warming and comfy aesthetic through the colder months.

Throws

A sofa throw or blanket has the potential to completely transform the sofa in your living room, literally in one fell swoop. The best thing about throw rugs are that just like pillows and cushions they can also be swapped around and moved at a moments notice. So if the kids have messy friends over or you have a dog like we do who enjoys a snuggle on the sofa every now and then, you could put down a blank, boring and cheap beige throw rug and then replace it with a more seductive and warming, thicker number when the kids are tucked away in bed at night.

Duvets

This one is a little more functional than aesthetic, but it’s still very important when it comes to getting a cosy nights sleep. During the summer, you probably decided to switch out the duvet for one with a lower tog rating or if it’s like the summer we have just had, a thin blanket. In the winter, however, you’re going to want any least 12 tog rating duvet to keep you warm and toasty during the night. Our thicker duvet will be coming out very shortly.

Lighting

It not only gets colder in winter, it gets darker too. BOO! This is particularly relevant in the bedroom, with many of us forced to dress in the dark in a morning it isn’t always the best way to start the day. To overcome this challenge, it’s worth considering investing in a small table lamp or corner lamp that will allow you to get dressed comfortably without waking your sleeping kids or your other half.

Bedding

Keeping warm in winter is without a doubt all about layers, but that doesn’t need to mean neglecting your style at the same time. Indeed, adding extra layers to your bedding can completely transform the vibe of a bedroom. Extra throws, a heated blanket – whatever it is, it’s a sure fire way to warm up the bedroom and get super cosy in the home during winter!

Nature

And finally, perhaps the best way to make your home feel ready for the winter months is to bring the outdoors, in. Hang winter wreaths above the fireplace, experiment with pine cones as decorations or find a broken, leafless branch and decorate it with fairy lights. The main thing is to generally focus on bringing natural textures and colours in the home and you’ll soon have your house feeling like a winter wonderland.

How will you be making your home cosy this winter?
