WINTER BREAKS EVERYONE SHOULD TRY

This is a collaborative post Govia – Winter Breaks that everyone should try

Most of us choose to take a break during the summer, when warm weather beckons us from overseas, it’s so tempting to head off on our jollies. But the fact is that a winter break is often just as revitalising, especially given that so many of us suffer from winter blues when the weather gets colder and the nights get darker.  If you’re considering a winter break, you might find yourself a little bit short of inspiration so here’s a few potential destinations you might consider!

Skiing

Let’s start with perhaps one of the most obvious way to spend your break in winter: on the side of a mountain. The Alps offer dozens of world-class resorts to enjoy, but if you’re willing to travel further, you’ll find great skiing (and snowboarding) facilities in the States, Canada and Japan too. I have only ever tried skiing on a dry slope here in the UK and I’d love to try it for real one day!

German Festivals

You might have noticed the introduction of ‘German’ markets to larger British towns and cities throughout winter. But if you want to experience the genuine Weihnachtsmärkte, you’ll have to travel to a German city. Nowadays, Germany is only a short flight away; you can also catch a train from London Bridge to Gatwick Airport and be disembarking in Berlin just a few hours later, how easy does that sound? Nuremberg, Dresden and Munich all offer fantastic markets as well – why not give them a try?

The Northern Lights

The Aurora Borealis features high on lots of bucket-lists, including mine, but it’s something you have to be prepared to track down and be patient with. It’s at its most spectacular during very cold and dry weather, from a suitable part of the world. These locations include ‘Lapland’ regions of northern Scandinavia, Iceland and Greenland, however, if you don’t want to travel that far, you can get a taste of the lights from certain parts of Scotland – provided that the conditions are right. How awesome is that?

Husky Sledding

Husky sledding is something you might want to combine with a trip through Norway to see the northern lights. It’s a tried and tested way to travel, and it’ll offer you a real sense of excitement and isolation as you journey through a frozen wilderness. This is something you have to try at least once, as there’s no experience quite like it. Where do I sign up?

Ice-bed Hotel

If you’re going to go away for winter, then why not embrace the cold conditions? That’s if you can brave it! If you’re willing to put your hand in your pocket, then you can stay for a few nights in a hotel that’s actually made from ice. Ice hotels are temporary buildings that come and go with the changing seasons; to sleep in one, you’ll need to wear a layer of thermal pyjamas (any excuse to get some new pj’s for winter!) They’re an experience that’s not for everyone, but all of the worthwhile ones are! Have a read about experiences at the Romanian Ice Hotel here.

Have you tried any of these?
